Allison Glunz of Osceola and Sara Hammer of CubaCity are the 2008 recipients of
$500 post-secondary scholarships from the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders
Cooperative.The scholarships will be
presented at the WSBC Annual Meeting on October 20 in Reedsburg.
Glunz,
20, the daughter of Greg and Shelby Glunz, is a 2005
graduate of AmeryHigh
School, and she currently attends the University
of Wisconsin – RiverFalls, with a major in computer
science.Her family owns a flock of
about 30 registered Suffolks, and Glunz has been
actively involved in daily farm chores as well as deworming,
vaccinating, washing, shearing and fitting sheep.As a 4-H member, she showed sheep for seven
years, including at the Polk County Fair, Interstate Livestock Show and
Wisconsin State Fair.She received the
Master Herdsman Award at the Interstate Show and was fourth place Premier
Exhibitor at the Wisconsin State Fair.She served as a youth leader for her 4-H club’s sheep project.
Glunz
has been highly involved with the Indianhead Sheep Breeders Association.For the past year, she has served as editor
of its newsletter and web master of its website, www.indianheadsheep.com.She has served as the registration clerk for ISBA’s annual shepherds’ clinic for several years, and she
works at the concession stand at the UW-RiverFalls sheep sale.
When she graduates
from UW-RiverFalls
in two years, Glunz plans to work in an information
technology- or computer programming-related field.She also wants to continue working with ISBA’s newsletter and website.
Hammer, 20, the
daughter of David and Katherine Hammer, is a 2005 graduate of BentonHigh School, and she currently
attends the University of Wisconsin
– Oshkosh, majoring in anthropology
and minoring in history.She owns Knee
Deep Lincolns and is a member of the National Lincoln Sheep Breeders
Association, regularly attending its meetings and exhibiting at its national
show.
When Hammer first
joined 4-H, she showed market lambs and Columbia
breeding stock at local fairs, like the Lafayette County Fair and Belmont
School Fair, and she showed fleeces at the Wisconsin State Fair open fleece
show.In 1997, she started showing
Lincoln Longwool breeding stock at those shows as
well as the open shows at the Iowa State Fair, Grant County Fair and Mississippi
Valley Fair, plus the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival and National Lincoln
Show and Sale.When she is not at school, she assists her
parents with raising their flocks.
When she graduates
from UW-Oshkosh, Hammer wants to attend graduate school in library science or
work for a museum or university in research or archiving.After settling into a career, she wants to
purchase a farm where she can raise a small flock of Lincoln
sheep and further her involvement with the breed.
WSBC scholarships
are based on high-school activities in agriculture, community service,
participation in breed or other sheep-organization activities and career
goals.The applicants or their families
must be current WSBC members to be eligible for the scholarships.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
The Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative will award up to
four (4) $500 scholarships annually.
CRITERIA FOR SCHOLARSHIP
APPLICANTS
·Parents or individual must be current members of the
Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative
·Must be a high school senior graduating in 2008 or college
student age 21 or under.
·Must be carrying or have carried sheep as an 4-H or FFA project.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
·Summarization of 4-H/FFA project experience, leadership,
honors and awards
·Summarization of your sheep program
·Participation in WSBC, breed or other sheep organizations
groups
·Future Goals and Education Plans
·One
letter of recommendation

2008 scholarships
will be announced at the 2008 Sheep and Wool Festival to be held at the
Jefferson County Fairgrounds, September 5-7th, 2008.All scholarships will be paid in January of
2009.Winning applicants are required to
submit a copy of their Fall 2008 semester transcripts
and their Spring 2009 class schedule to:Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative, 7811 N.
Consolidated School Rd, Edgerton, WI53534.Scholarship checks will be sent after the
information has been received.
Any Wisconsin
state breed association, sheep organization or producer may request
reimbursement from the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative (WSBC) for
educational or promotional events provided the following criteria are met:
1)The requesting organization must be a member of the
WSBC.
2)The event benefits the sheep industry either through
promoting sheep and/or sheep products or by educating youth about the sheep
industry.
3)The request for monies needs to be made at least thirty
(30) days prior to the event.Requests
are to be in writing, sent to the WSBC, and need to include, at a minimum, the
following information:
a)The purpose of the event, including place and time;
b)The number of persons expected to be attending the
event;
c)A statement about how or why the event promotes the
sheep industry and/or educates the youth of Wisconsin;
d)The anticipated cost of the event, showing itemized
expenses;
e)The amount requested for reimbursement;
f)Any other information which you feel will help the WSBC
consider your request.
4)The WSBC will discuss the request at their next
scheduled Board meeting and provide a written
response.
5)The organization agrees to indicate sponsorship by the
WSBC at the event and in their promotional/advertising materials.
6)WSBC reserves the right to accept or reject any request
for reimbursement and amend the terms and conditions of these guidelines at any
time.
7)Awards are specifically excluded from this program.
